Senior Fall and Safety Awareness

A Simple Thing Can Change Your Life...

A simple thing can change your life—like tripping on a rug or slipping on a wet floor. If you fall, you could break a bone, like thousands of older men and women do each year. A broken bone might not sound awful, but, for older people, a break can be the start of many more serious problems.

Did you know?

  • 800,000 Americans worldwide are hospitalized every year due to a fall.
  • 25% of Americans 65 years and older have had at least one fall.
  • 95% of hip fractures are caused by falls.
  • Falls are the second leading cause of accidental or unintentional injuries that have resulted in death.
Many things can cause a fall. Your eyesight, hearing, and reflexes might not be as sharp as they were when you were younger. Diabetes, heart disease, or problems with your thyroid, nerves, feet, or blood vessels can affect your balance. Some medicines can cause you to feel dizzy or sleepy, making you more likely to fall. Consulting with a healthcare advisor can help you determine if these factors are putting you at risk.

Some Quick Tips

Mobility Tip: Wear safe shoes that fit well, have a firm heel to provide stability, and have a textured sole to prevent slipping.
Wellness Tip: Stay active – increase strength and improve your balance with exercise.
There are many more steps you can take NOW that will increase your awareness and reduce your fall risk!
